Inside Look: Mud Factor Charity Run

Last weekend I decided to do something I’ve never done, a race. I’ve never been competitive, or physically fit, but I’ve been on a health kick lately and it’s been a wonderful experience meeting like-minded people.

Enter Mud Factor, my CrossFit coach got me to sign up for it. I had no idea what to expect so I went and bought gym shorts that felt like they were made of swim suit material for fast drying purposes and a quick dry moisture wicking shirt. It’s also a good idea to wear crew socks just in case you have to do any rope climbing, AND your oldest shoes possible.

We arrived at Amelia Earhart park about an hour before our scheduled race time. We went through registration and I checked my bag in. We were assigned numbers and that’s when the pre-race jitters started.

I felt my heart rate pick up. I started observing all the people stretching and warming up, we signed their graffiti wall, because if you don’t, can you really say you attended?

Then came our call time, we gathered near the starting line along with all the other runners, there was a hype man that reassured us that it was all in good fun, not to take it seriously and to keep a steady pace.

Once we got started the first obstacle was a wall we had to climb, the second was a slip and slide! That was probably the most fun, I accidentally slid off the plastic cover and went into the mud. Not gonna lie, it was more fun than I thought, it kind of brings you back to a carefree childhood place. Once the initial shock wore off, I was as happy as a pig in mud, literally it all fell into place. We jogged, talked, laughed, and just had fun.

When you cross the finish line you’re given a small (maybe 6 oz) glass of water and a finisher medal. This medal, that when placed around your neck, ignites a competitive spirit in you that causes you to then want to register for yet another race! When you finish there’s a rinse off area, with cold water. It’s not a Hilton shower but it helps to rinse off plenty of mud.
