Small Town Heroes, Big City Flavor
On a bright Thursday morning we walked into Messenger Coffee on Grand Avenue in the Crossroads District and had a nice chat with the manager Sarah Hockla better known to the crew as just Hockla. This Lenexa born and raised gal, who reps Midtown KC, first started with the company in her hometown at Black Dog Coffee House as a delivery driver before quickly being promoted into the pastry division and just 1 year later running their flagship Messenger Coffee location in KC. As we sat down and learned her story we learned all about what it was like to live, work and play in KC, here is what she had to say.
Why do people come in to Messenger Coffee?
People come in with positive intentions, being thoughtful and planned out, looking for the best of the best, bar none and to connect with each other.
What inspires you about living in Kansas City?
The People! This is a place that really nurtures creative souls. I love how we have a space that connects the community, where people talk to each other, connect and handle business.
What has been the project that you are most proud of?
I am most excited about our series of events that we host here at Messenger Coffee. Our Farmer’s Market happens 3 times a week and is a return to the roots of the owners original Ibis Bakery days. We also have brand new Cheese Supper Nights on Fridays at 630pm where everybody lines up out the door to get their own personal local cheese and produce platter alongside some wine or beer and enjoy the views from the rooftop.
What is your top recommended coffee?
If you're a black coffee drinker then you need to try the Iced Kenyan Pour Over. If something with flavor and milk is more your bag of beans than you should try the Honey Bear Latte that has our home made syrup. Actually all of our syrups are homemade, that's something we're really proud to do.
Top recommended pastry?
Our roots are founded in the bakery and pastry world which is why when you come here you have to try our croissants. Top choice has to be the Gianduja croissant which is filled with Chocolate and Hazelnut. All of our bread is milled on site through our unique 30 hour fermentation process and ultimately culminates into the best sourdough bread you have ever tasted.
What does the word ‘community’ mean to you?
Hmmm, thats a tough one. Sarah looks into the distance as if seeking the perfect words from her personal experience. You can tell this means a lot to her. Community means supporting each others needs.
What does the word ‘Experience’ mean to you? Are experiences important?
To me experiences can be like curated events. I always say Life is beautiful why be bored! Experiences are what shapes us into who we are, who we become and who we can be.
What are some of your favorite experiences, restaurants, hidden gems, events in KC?
Ok so if you're in town as a visitor or a local that is looking to discover and explore KC you need to visit some of my favorites including the:
- Kemper Museum
- First Fridays in Crossroads
- Doubleshift Brewery
- Dead Beet Taco Shop (Vegan Pop-Up)
- Blue Koi
- 39th Street
- Imperial Foot Care
- Inner Space Yoga Studio
So that's the deal KC! When it comes to looking for an experiential coffee shop that delivers you caffeine, community and cinematic views from the rooftop, there's nowhere else to go that delivers the message like Messenger Coffee. Thank you to Sarah Hockla and the entire team at MC on Grand for giving us a behind the scenes view of the people, process and passion behind the food and drinks that keep us building a better Kansas City.
